11-3-05: Message to Hard Shell authors from fellow author Murdoch Hughes:

I never met Dirk personally, but he did some fantastic artwork for my book, Death Mask of the Jaguar, so I feel we had a connection. It's a tragic loss for Mary and her family, and a loss for us, who will no longer have his art to magically make our words come alive.

I've attached the cover he did for me, and a simple poem, because words are woefully lacking in moments like these. It would be nice to see some of his other covers and artwork.

For Dirk

A candle has gone out
Before giving all its light
A candle that was burning bright.
An artist whose work had just begun
His self-portrait left undone.
A candle has gone out tonight.

Murdoch

Who was supposed to have a bomb on their book cover?

I had to ask. It's been a bad couple of days thinking about Dirk and the whole Wolf family, but that bomb [in the news] has helped me remember that Dirk was, after all, a humorous person. Here he's left a mystery which is probably no mystery at all for those of us in the publishing world, but is really plaguing the cops.

Maybe it's a lesson to the rest of us to check our own closets just in case...

Seriously, I have never known anyone that's been murdered before and the disbelief that goes with the news is numbing. The last time I saw Dirk he was just 18 and a really good dinner companion. It's hard to accept that he's gone.

Mary's family has so often been visited by tragedy. Let us pray that this is the last sorrow she sees for a long time to come.

I will never forget Dirk. Every time I look at my Hard Shell books, for which he did the cover illustrations, I will be reminded of him. RIP, Dirk.

I was stunned and horrified when I heard the news. And then, I sat at the computer and cried. Dirk was such a darling. How anyone could hurt him, I just can't fathom. I keep Mary and her family in my prayers always. Now I send a prayer up each time I look at work Dirk has done for me and my books and you all wouldn't believe how often that is. My love and sympathy to the family and Mel that includes you and Mandy as well.
